I'm so tired I can't sleep. How annoying is that? 12:25 AM

Heart surgery patients give me the willies.

They're sick. They're scary. They drop their blood pressure. The have arrhythmias. I'm not even on cardiothoaracic surgery. These are just my call nights. Yikes.

Do you know what it's like to have a patient go all creepy on you and tell you that he thinks he might die today, and that he hopes he does? I managed to talk him out of it for today. He says he'll do it tomorrow. I'm on call that day, so I'll be talking him out of it then, too. Don't even tell me that psych should see him. They already did. The man is old, and his mind is made up. He doesn't have a plan that I could get out of him. He just repeated himself a lot. I went to his chart and checked a bunch of stuff. He will be okay for now, but I'm tacycardic myself.

I'm going to spend the day reading. The list includes the following:
1.) Read about EKGs because I suck at interpreting them.
2.) Read about total parenteral nutrition because I have some nagging questions.
3.) Read about the stomach for my quiz.
4.) Read The Good German by Joseph Kanon for my sanity.

Hopefully, when I go back to work in the morning, everyone will still be okay, and I'll be a better resident. Sigh. 11:39 AM
